Comprehensive Master Classes for Singers and Actors: an UrbanArias Initiative

Is there an aria you want to work on? A new piece for an upcoming audition? Or that one number in your book that you love but struggle with? Let it become an “Urban Aria,” get it out of your head and onto the stage! Communicate with your audience in a clear, meaningful way while allowing your vocal technique to work for you instead of dictating your acting style.

Taught by UrbanArias Artistic Director Robert Wood (San Francisco Opera, Vancouver Opera, Wolf Trap, Minnesota Opera) and actress and voice teacher Susan Derry (Broadway, Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall), this class is two for the price of one. Call it what you like:

Acting for the Singer (there’s nothing to be afraid of),

or   Singing for the Actor (there’s STILL nothing to be afraid of!!)

Cost: $60

Four singers per class; bring us your challenges!

At UrbanArias, our artistic philosophy is rooted firmly in the belief that technically proficient, classically-trained voices and realistic, committed acting are the recipe for operatic and musical theater success – at our intimate venue or anywhere. One without the other leaves the audience unsatisfied. Lyric theater of any kind demands total concentration, impeccable musical and theater skills, and the flexible attitude to allow those skills to shine.

The UrbanArias Studio brings Susan Derry and Robert Wood’s years of experience and continued work on the national opera and musical theater scenes to the Washington D.C. area’s developing singing actors, helping participants achieve their personal performing goals, as well as aiding them in their continued exploration of the powerful union of passionate musical interpretation and organic acting.
